Fidget Cube: The Desk Toy That Helps You Focus

Sometimes, during school or college premises your classmate or you might have disturbed your friends or the whole class by clicking a pen, tapping the table, tapping legs on the floor, etc. This act of moving about restlessly is known as fidgeting.

Fidgeting may be a result of nervousness, agitation, boredom or a combination of these. It may be a result of genes and is often an unconscious act. Fidgeting may involve playing with one's fingers, hair, items of clothing and ring spinning. Actually, we all do it.

However if you’re looking for a fun and entertaining way to fidget, you might be interested in a device called the Fidget Cube, a project on Kickstarter that has garnered a lot of attention in the recent weeks, and at this time of posting, has managed to raise more than $6.3 million, way, way past its original and humble goal of $15,000.

So, what is Fidget Cube?Basically, it is a a vinyl desk toy for anyone who likes to fidget. Fidget Cube (patent pending) has six sides. Each side features something to fidget with:

  • Flip: Looks similar as the switch. Pivot the switch back and forth gently to fidget silently, or quickly for more audible click.
  • Roll: The gears and ball are all about rolling movements. The ball sporting  a built-in click feature.
  • Glide: A joystick that coasts across the surface.
  • Click: No need to click the pen anymore. You'll find 3 clicker buttons and 2 silenced buttons on this side design to satisfy the clicker in each of us.
  • Spin: A rotating dial.
  • Breathe: Say, goodbye to stress. The design of this face is inspired by traditional worry stones, tools used to reduce anxiety when rubbed.

The Fidget Cube comes in ten different colors to match your desk aesthetics, and will retail at around $25 when released.

After reading the article the most important question arises- Is fidgeting beneficial to us? Yes, it is beneficial in following ways:-
  • People who fidget regularly tend to weigh less than people who do not fidget because they burn more calories than those who remain still. It has been reported that fidgeting burns around an extra 350 calories a day.
  • Research by Dr. Karen Pine and colleagues at the University of Hertfordshire funded by The Economic and Social Research Council found that children that were allowed to fidget with their hands performed better in memory and learning tests.
  • People who fidget regularly tend to stay more focused at work.
